Major step in personalized treatment — Thanks to a 2007 research grant from Susan G. Komen for the Cure®, scientists identified a set of 50 genes that oncologists can potentially use to tailor individualized treatments for all breast cancer patients.
EL PASO, TX June 18, 2009 — The El Paso Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure awarded nearly $500,000 to local non-profit organizations, educational institutions and national breast cancer research at a special press conference held this morning Butterfield Trail Golf Club. Grant recipients included organizations and educational institutions that provide breast cancer education, screening and treatment to underserved men and women throughout El Paso County.
The Affiliate proudly awarded $310,000 to the following 2009-2010 local grant recipients:
Additionally, $185,000 was awarded to national breast cancer research for a grand total of $495,000. Since 1993, the Affiliate has granted more than $3 million to the El Paso community.
With sincere gratitude, the El Paso Affiliate recognized its individual and corporate donors for their outstanding in-kind and financial contributions that assist us in fulfilling our promise to save lives and end breast cancer forever.
Outstanding volunteers that have contributed their time and dedication to the local fight against breast cancer were recognized. Awards were presented to the 2009 New Activist of the Year – Nancy Schaughency, 2009 Co-Survivor Activists of the Year to Sally Elguera and Maggie Soto, 2009 Group Activists of the Year – Juvenile Probation Department and the 2009 Komen National Power of One Award to Dianna Rolleg.
The press conference also kicked off the 2010 Komen El Paso Race for the Cure® season. The 18th Annual Komen El Paso Race for the Cure® will take place on Sunday, February 21, 2009. The Race is the largest 5K run/walk in El Paso with over 11,500 participants in 2009 and is part of the largest 5K series in the world with over 1.5 million individuals participating in 2009.
